Are you playing someone else’s game? If so, perhaps it’s the reason why you’re not happy with your career.
“From the moment we’re born, others’ expectations shape our behaviors, choices, and definitions of success,” says Robin Moriarty Ph.D., author of What Game Are You Playing?: A Framework for Redefining Success and Achieving What Matters Most.
We’re a product of our environment. As a child, our parents usually know what’s best for us, so we take heed to our parents’ advice.
Dr. Moriarty adds, “conditioning is a part of every society, and it’s not necessarily bad. It just means that someone else is defining your bigger game of life for you. When you play your own game, you write the rules, you decide what winning looks like, you control the choices, you make the moves, and you can design the game to be what you want it to be.”
Robin is no stranger to playing someone else’s game. I asked, “When you were an adolescent and growing up to be an adult, were you playing someone else’s game?”
She replied, “Absolutely. And it wasn’t just when I was a child. I was doing it in my 20s and part of my 30s. I was raised to believe that living a successful life was about [having enough finances], being married, having kids, how you look, and where you go on vacation.”
Robin has designed her life and career in a way that has allowed her to live on four continents and travel to over 60 countries. As an American expat, I share her same passion for incorporating travel and life abroad when designing your lifestyle.
